My sister and I are thinking of spending 4 or 5 nights at Casa del Mar in Barahona. Has anyone been there? It's our first time to the DR and we're open to suggestions. First of all, we'd like to rent a car and drive ourselves to different beaches everyday. Is it safe to drive there from the airport and around the area? Also, we'd like to know if there's any other part of the island which is worth visiting.
We'd like something away from the crowds, especially since we're traveling during spring break. That is a beautiful area but quite remote. You would need your own transport to get around. The coast south is spectacular and worth going as far as perdenales - passing through tropical dry forest to bahia de las aguilas - stunning remote area. If you do not have transpott consider the samana peninsular - las galeras at the east end is quiet, remote and beautiful.
With a few small hotels. You mentioned about driving. Many would not recommend it as it can be very dangerous. The roads are in reasonable condition it is the other drivers that are the problem. You need to be alert at all times for anything.
If you hire a car from santo domingo airport getting through the city towards barahons will be a challenge. Do not drive at night. Barahona to samana would be a long drive - do one or the other.
